About the Trainer

Kelly Ashley - With 20 years of experience in education, Kelly Ashley has worked in in the US and UK as a teacher, consultant, trainer and author. She currently works with schools and organisations across the UK, offering bespoke training and consultancy support on all aspects of the primary English curriculum. Kelly’s keen interest in vocabulary and language development has led to the publication of her first book, Word Power: Amplifying vocabulary instruction (2019).

Course Outline

In this two and a half hour webinar, Kelly will share fun, practical ways to build pupils’ ‘Word Power’ within a literature-rich, primary classroom.  Using approaches outlined in her new book, Word Power: Amplifying vocabulary instruction (2019), Kelly will talk through specific strategies that can be used to ‘amplify’ the instruction of new language across the curriculum, in context.

Session 1 (9.30am-11am)
Key points for discussion:
-  Research and background on how to address the ‘word gap’;
-  The importance of providing opportunities for both explicit (direct teaching) and implicit (language-rich environment) instruction of vocabulary;
-  An introduction to Word Power ‘Big Ideas’ and ‘Power-Up’ strategies.
